Cattlemen See Red on Feeders Despite Price Outlook
Kansas State University economist Orlen C. Grunewald told Cattlemen's Day attendees that breakeven prices for feedlot operators in early 1981 likely set at 73 to 75 dollars per cwt and 72 to 74 dollars in spring, keeping many feeders in the red despite potential Spring price gains. He noted 1980 losses near 50 dollars per head amid high interest, abundant meat supplies, rising feed costs, and weak consumer incomes, driven by competition from poultry and other factors rather than beef scarcity.

Spring Insight on Cattle Prices and Market Outlook
Agricultural analyst Grunewald projects slower market currentness as feeders hold animals longer. He expects Choice steer prices to average 65 to 73 dollars per cwt, with modest gains in Q2 as meat supplies tighten and grain prices fall. He notes wider spreads between feeder and fat cattle narrowing and predicts rapid cattle inventory growth may challenge profitability.

Wind erosion spreads across Kansas farms in February winds
The USDA Soil Conservation Service reports 35 to 50 mph winds on February 10 caused soil erosion across Kansas. Despite dry conditions, wheat losses were minimal due to residue cover and conservation tillage. Water supplies decline as ponds stay dry, with warnings that wind erosion could worsen without snow or rain.
