Ottawa School Board Desegregation Case 1881 Ruling
Franklin County District Court found Ottawa schools violated the 14th Amendment by segregating students. The Kansas Supreme Court upheld, in an Ottawa‑written decision, but the ruling was effectively overturned by Plessy v Ferguson in 1896. Brown v Board of Education later used similar arguments in 1954.

Richmond Free Fair Board seeks transfer of fairgrounds ownership
Richmond officials consider taking over ownership of the fairgrounds after the Free Fair Board offered to deed the land to the city. Board president Bob Thompson cited high insurance costs of about 1,000 dollars per half of the annual budget, threatening the future of the three day event. Mayor Bill Wood supports the move to preserve the 80 year old tradition with 4-H exhibits, animal shows, a parade, street dance, and rides while council members want a full proposal and contract first.
