Jazz at the Library Showcases Burns Series and Recordings

The library highlights Burns's Jazz in ten installments tracing its arc from Gumbo to A Masterpiece by Midnight with extensive interviews and archival material. Wynton Marsalis impresses, and Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong thread through the series. New jazz CDs include The Best of Ken Burns Jazz and Armstrongs What a Wonderful World remastered. Also featured is Riding With the King by B B King and Eric Clapton.

Abilene Man Builds Slavery History Collection

Scott Price, a retired Army major from Abilene, started collecting a 125 volume set on slavery after a segregation shock in Alabama in the 1960s. He donated the set to Kansas State University along with other African American history works, forming the Richard Scott Price Anti Slavery Collection.

Snow Falling on Cedars Talk at Ottawa Library

The Ottawa City Library will host a 3 p.m. discussion of Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson, led by Amy Fleury. This rescheduled event closes the Community: the Way We Live series, exploring community interactions with focus on Japanese immigrants in 1950s Pacific Northwest.

Author Florence Smith to speak at Williamsburg event

Florence B. Smith, author of 41 western novels, including The Devil Comes to Franklin County, will speak at the Williamsburg Community Building at 11 a.m. March 21, hosted by the Williamsburg Community Library and the Senior Nutrition Site. Noon meals cost 2.50 with reservations due by March 19 to Hazel Brown or Eloise Bennett. reception and public welcome.

Wal-Mart and Amazon May Form Strategic Alliance

Shares in Amazon rose over 26 percent after The Sunday Times reported a six week plan for a strategic alliance with Wal-Mart. Amazon would manage Wal-Mart online strategy while gaining a presence in Wal-Mart stores. analysts offered mixed views. Wal-Mart and Amazon declined comment.
