Government Programs To Take Awhile To Help Kansas Farmers
Kansas State University economist Mike Sands reports that current federal price support and Payment in Kind plans will not quickly reduce large grain stocks or raise prices. 1983 profits for cattle and hog producers look weaker than 1982 due to export slowdowns, livestock liquidation, and weather delays. Forward pricing for wheat remains limited though corn pricing is advised. cattle and hog markets may see delayed strength into spring and summer with potential break-even around mid 60s for cattle and higher for grazing programs. State boards note greenbug populations sharply down by late February due to a cold wet spell, with survival limited to early wheat under cover, most infested areas showing reduced pest activity.
