NFL Eyes Replacements If Strike Hits 1982 Season

NFL executives consider using replacement players if a strike disrupts the 1982 season. The NFL Players Association and league owners resume bargaining for a new labor deal amid networks seeking a TV package potentially worth $2 billion. Ed Garvey says owners may hire replacements, but networks may not pay for pickup football. If a walkout occurs, it could start after the September 12 opener, possibly around October 24. The union notes lessons from 1974 and asserts it has funds to endure a full season strike.

Players Union Strike Insurance Costs Shift in Baseball

Clubs secure a $150 million credit line from Crocker National Bank to cover lost games during a strike. If games are canceled, teams receive expected gate and TV revenues, while the league gains years to repay. Lloyds of London payments during a 50 day strike have undermined insurance viability, making rates prohibitive. The approach mirrors credit union loans for players and possible jobs for wives as a buffer.
