A fire at 1116 N. Poplar in Ottawa caused about 10 800 dollars in damage to a one story house owned by Howard Fleischer. Discovered at 2 43 am by neighbors, firefighters remained on scene until 4 40 am. Fire Chief G A Diamond Jr said the loss totals about 10 000 dollars and suspected faulty furnace or wiring. The house was undergoing remodeling and insured. An arson investigator was to examine a gutted house at 534 S. Poplar burned Wednesday while sheriff officers aided a barn fire east of Pomona at Merle Montague residence.
In Topeka the Republican majority failed to override Gov. Docking's veto on the apportionment bill, with 80 in favor and 45 against. In a nationwide scare linked to a $2 million ransom demand, extortionists planted bombs on two TWA jets and warned of more. A cockpit bomb exploded in Las Vegas while another was found aboard a JFK plane and defused. Bomb threats caused landings and evacuations in Richmond, Flint, Miami, and Reno, with no bombs found. The Princeton Citizens Improvement Committee, formed in 1969 to beautify the town, adopted a by law amendment creating a six member board to run the group. Six directors will be elected for staggered terms, with vacancies filled by the board. New directors named include Marian Madison Vern Yates Gary Hoopes Roberta Denart Gloria Bronson and Jim Rhodes. The group plans a kiddie park land purchase with about 500 on hand and city aid expected. The Princeton Festival remains a key fund raiser featuring a riding lawn mower race and Pickers and Singers with more food and bingo planned.

Also, NY grand jury indicts author Clifford Irving, his wife Edith and researchers Richard Suskind on grand larceny conspiracy and forgery related to Irving's disputed Howard Hughes autobiography.
U S planes strike in North Vietnam for the eighth straight day as Kitty Hawk rejoins Indochina air operations. South Vietnamese pilots claim two enemy tanks and a truck near Ben Het border camp, with further tank activity reported nearby. U S B 52s hit targets near Da Nang while Viet Cong overrun a Mekong Delta militia post, with two patrol boats sunk at Qui Nhon harbor.
An explosion in a four room house in Belfast's Lower Falls area killed three people and injured four. Police suspect a gelignite bomb set by the Irish Republican Army as the area, a longtime IRA stronghold, was searched. The incident raises the Northern Ireland death toll to 268 in 31 months of sectarian conflict. Protestant workers planned a four hour strike and electricity cutoff in protest of violence and government concessions to Catholics.
