Lawmakers fear highway programs will be cut
Kansas lawmakers expressed concern that the 10 year transportation plan may be trimmed as the House Appropriations Committee backed Gov. Graves budget for the Department of Transportation. The budget totals 923.3 million for 2001 with a 97 million rise in spending tied to construction projections. Graves proposed cutting 40 million from the general fund, a move critics say could set a precedent for future raids on transportation funding.

Revenue secretary apologizes for refund mistake in Kansas
Topeka Kansas Revenue Secretary Karla Pierce apologized to the House Taxation Committee for an error in February that sent about 2.2 million in refund checks to roughly 600 taxpayers. The misfire stemmed from a bug in a new computer system and a 60 day hold that lapsed February 11, with about 480 thousand actually cashed and over 23 thousand returned. Pierce blamed staff for missing an indefinite hold and pledged repayment or tax adjustment, while lawmakers pressed for disclosure and future safeguards.
