Sanctions Ruled Out In Wake Of Mexican Drug Killing
Secretary of State George Shultz told a Senate panel that economic sanctions are not the answer to Mexico's handling of drug traffickers after the abduction and murder of U.S. agent Enrique Camarena Salazar. Meese pledged to pursue terrorists and expand cooperation to bring conspirators to justice, while officials criticized Mexico's response as inadequate.

UAW Opposes Chrysler Plan For More Far East Cars
UAW President Owen Bieber criticized Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca after the firm announced plans to triple shipments of small cars from Japan, a move tied to the end of U.S. small-car production unless Congress intervenes. Iacocca called it Plan B and said the American market is open to foreign cars. Chrysler canceled domestic expansion plans including a new plant in Indianapolis and a subcompact P-car project in Belvidere.
