The Cincinnati Bearcats, led by Oscar Robertson, finished the regular season 25 1 and earned 92 first place votes to top California in the final AP poll. California had 46 first place votes with a 24 1 record. Voting covered through March 6. The Big Eight playoff and NCAA Midwest Regional details followed with Kansas and Kansas State set for a playoff in Manhattan.

Tall freshman Gary Ryan 6-7 195 pounds on a music scholarship led Oklahoma Baptist University to a 75-71 upset over third-seeded Southern Illinois in the NAIA tournament first round. Ryan scored seven points, including a tying tip-in and a decisive late shot after entering the game late with the Bison trailing 62-67. He entered the tourney with a .579 season scoring average and 11 points in 19 games. Other opening games featured Southwest Texas State, Villa Madonna, New Mexico Highlands, Whittier, William Jewell, Savannah State, Grambling, and Tennessee A&I.
