Reagan budget cuts would affect thousands in Kansas
A congressional analysis projects Reagan proposed federal cuts would deny services to more than 5,000 Kansans across five programs this year. It estimates reductions in day care, elderly homemaker care, foster care, rehabilitation, and child abuse services, with broader implications as funds are reorganized for state distribution.

Kansas House Passes Severance Tax Amendment For Aid To Businesses
The Kansas House approved Rep. Denny Burgess amendment to severance tax bill by 63 to 61. It would commit 84 million dollars in tax credits to merchants manufacturers and livestock inventory and farm machinery property tax payers, aiming to ease perceived unfair taxes on businesses and farmers. If fully used the plan could require 14 million from the general fund, with future oil and gas price increases potentially offsetting this. The existing bill imposes a five percent severance tax on oil and natural gas and two percent on coal salt and cement. An earlier compromise would have redirected half the revenue to school property tax relief. The chamber also rejected a salt exclusion and a new oil and gas discovery exemption proposed by lawmakers.
