Life of Clyde Cessna Pioneer Aviator and Empresario
Clyde Vernon Cessna born December 5 1879 in Hawthorne Iowa. He grew up on a Kansas farm and became a self taught inventor in farm machinery. After quitting a Enid Oklahoma salesman job in 1910 he joined Queen Aeroplane Company and built his own Silverwing monoplane in 1911. He moved to Wichita in 1917 and improved airplane designs. In 1925 he formed Travel Air with Lloyd Stearman and Walter Beech, leading a major aircraft venture. After a failed expansion and the Curtiss service bankruptcy he closed the plant in 1931. He reopened in 1934 and by 1936 the company was solid. He retired to farming and died November 20 1954 in Rago. Cessna Aircraft Corporation remains headquartered in Wichita.
