Clean homes cut lead exposure in urban children

A study of 99 urban children with high blood lead levels followed 9 to 15 months, split into two groups. One group received caretaker education plus free housecleaning to remove lead dust, the other only education. Dust from peeling paint, the likely lead source, was reduced by cleaning, lowering lead absorption.

Health news notes a Pediatrics March issue report showing 46 children in cleaned homes had an average 17 percent drop in blood lead, with those cleaned 20+ times averaging 34 percent. Researchers led by Dr. George G. Rhoads of Rutgers and UMDNJ say regular cleaning plus maternal education is a safe, partially effective intervention when lead-safe housing isn't possible.
