County Hires Agency To Collect Past Dues
The Franklin County Commission hired Berlin-Wheeler Inc. to collect two-year-old delinquent personal property taxes. The Topeka firm, which also works for several other counties, operates on a contingency fee of one third to one half of amounts collected. It has previously collected varying percentages from Shawnee, Jefferson, Miami and Leavenworth counties. The deal targets delinquent taxes from 1978 to 1982 above $50. The vote followed bids on AB and regular rock from Killough Inc. and Fogle Quarry as the county seeks closer rock sources for county projects.

Insurance industry lobbyists urged the Kansas House Insurance Committee to back a bill liberalizing no fault benefits while tightening sue rights. They seek removing the $500 medical expense threshold and replacing it with injury-based limits, raising automatic payments and adding a general pain and suffering category. Opponents led by the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association plan to speak next.
