Hog prices should be higher in 1982 says expert

Kansas livestock specialist Mike Sands forecasts hog prices averaging in the high 40s per hundredweight in 1982 despite modest beef supply gains and slow economic recovery. He notes weather and rising wholesale pork prices support prices, while hog slaughter and production could fall 11 to 15 percent from 1981 and 1980 peaks, aligning 1982 output with profit years from 1975 to 1979.

Hog industry outlook for 1982 price and returns

Expert Sands predicts mixed hog prices for 1982 with January-March near 46 per cwt and mid-year gains if pork supplies tighten. Prices could reach the low 50s if farrowing rises, or stay in upper 40s if farrowings grow. Feeding returns may turn positive this year as lower feed costs and higher hog prices offset costs. production costs projected around 45.50 per cwt barring further shifts. Careful management remains essential to avoid losses.
