USDA opens CRP renewals sign ups nationwide

The Agriculture Department began sign ups for the multibillion dollar CRP program to protect environmentally sensitive land. About 230 million acres are eligible, with two thirds of U.S. cropland. Enrollment runs through March 28 at Farm Service Agency offices. Officials expect to start with about 30 million acres and aim for 36.4 million by 2000. The initiative pays federal rents in exchange for farmers leaving land out of production for up to 10 years.
