Fired inspector testifies on routine errands in KC codes division
Kansas City, Mo. fired inspector Robert J. Saari testified that going home early and running personal errands during work hours was widespread and considered standard procedure. Supervisor Fred Leive denied the claim, saying Saari was never told he could run errands during work hours as eight inspectors under Leive’s unit and 19 inspectors citywide were terminated following a Star Times investigation.

Inspectors fired over falsifying records in Family Circus probe
Thirteen inspectors were terminated after a newspaper investigation into falsified records. Nine appealed. seven heard, two continued, with a ruling due in two months. Saari testified as hearings began for the fired inspectors. Six more were fired Tuesday. hearings set for the newer firings have not occurred. Meanwhile violent weather hit California. Flooding and mudslides in northern California displaced thousands, with 90 people trapped in a canyon and the Sacramento River cresting above flood stage. Helicopters rescued dozens, including 40+ from a barge and canyon victims, while a 3 year old died in Clear Lake as a mudslide leveled a hillside home. Three others died near Indio in traffic crashes tied to stormy roads. Mount Wilson reported 8 inches of rain in 24 hours, 16 inches for the week, with no relief in sight.
