Franklin County Literature Festival returns to Ottawa University

The fifth annual Franklin County Literature Festival will bring more than 1,400 third to sixth graders to Ottawa University on March 8. Fourteen authors from across the country will attend, organized by the Franklin County Reading Council to spark excitement for reading.

Reading program at Lincoln Elementary Faces Uncertain Future

Lincoln Elementary's reading program hangs in the balance with position uncertain as advocates push for all day kindergarten at the state level. Vickie Hall notes the reading council donates one book per author to each school, and four of a student’s top six authors will be read to classes. Linda Fredericks says the council aims for diverse genres and this year includes Barbara Robinson and Greg Brown.

Ottawa seeks National Register nomination for downtown district

OKs nomination to the National Register may place much of Ottawa downtown and blocks along Main Street on the register. The Kansas Historic Sites Board of Review approved the nomination last week and sent it to Washington for final review within 45 days. The district would include 122 E Second St old Post Office and 123 W Fourth St old City Hall now district offices, plus the George Washburn building at 413 S Main St designed by the famed architect.

Walk Kansas registration opens in Franklin County

Franklin County Extension encourages participation in Walk Kansas starting March 12 2006 with teams of six sharing a goal of 428 miles across Kansas by May. Cost is 6 per team plus optional Tshirts and sweatshirts, kickoff March 12 11 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 6 pm at the Franklin County Annex Rebecca McFarland notes last year 106 teams joined the program among the state’s highest participation rates.

Ottawa University soccer player found dead at Pomona Lake

Derrick C. Heidt, 22, Ottawa University student and soccer player, was found dead Monday night in the West Quarry Area of Pomona Lake Osage County. Sheriff says autopsy lists accidental death. investigation continues with toxicology results due in 6 to 10 weeks. coach Glen Cahill expresses heartbreak and grief to the team and parents.

Pomona City Council Primary May Be Too Close to Call

A final canvass Monday could decide which candidates advance in Pomona City Council race after provisional and advance votes not yet tallied. Dorothy Pritchard led with 39 votes, followed by Richard Adler and Mary Whitaker with 37 each, with Schwane Stankard and White in the middle of the field. Provisional and advance votes may shift final totals. an earlier ballot error did not affect totals as White was added after discovery.
