Ottawa Legion AA edged Garnell 3-2 at Orris Cox Field as three hits produced the winning rally. Tim Lancaster walked and Brad Keaton doubled to drive in the deciding run in the sixth. Darren Green allowed six hits, four walks, and struck out seven to improve to 4-0. Ottawa improves to 18-6 and hosts Olathe tonight at 8.
In Daytona Beach Florida J R Richard pitched four innings for the Florida State League Daytona Beach Astros in his first game since a near fatal stroke on July 30 1980. He threw 64 pitches felt strong and said he aimed to learn how to pitch not just strike out hitters while doctors and Astros officials noted he must rebuild fielding reflexes and stiffness. Astros GM Al Rosen and opposing players praised his courage as he faced Class A hitters and the crowd of 4500 at City Island Park.
Ottawa junior baseball team split with Blue Valley 3-2 in game one as Bryan Kelley pitched four hits and struck out 10. David McCrea hit a three run homer in the sixth to give Ottawa a 2-1 lead before Blue Valley tied it in the sixth and Ottawa won it in the seventh. Paul Westhead named Chicago Bulls coach on a four year deal after a 34-48 showing last season. He previously led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 112-50 record and an NBA title in 1980, replacing interim coach Rod Thorn who praised his credentials.
