Belfast voter turnout high in last chance for peace poll

Northern Ireland voters turnout appeared near a record level in the so called last chance for peace election with more than 70 percent likely to have voted. Counting began with first results expected late today and continuing into Saturday amid a drop in violence and favorable weather. The election pitted 210 candidates from 19 parties for 78 seats as the Protestant Unionist party dominance faced a shift toward minority participation and potential British link preservation. London outlined plans for a new assembly to share power with Catholics without severing ties to Britain. The Protestant majority faced a leadership contest between William Craig and Ian Paisley allies and the Unionist party of Brian Faulkner.
