El Jacal marks 26th anniversary with liquor by the drink

El Jacal Mexican Restaurant on Main Street celebrates 26 years in business this weekend with a move to serving liquor by the drink. Margaritas and imported beers will be offered for the first time as the anniversary festivities proceed Saturday. The restaurant opened July 2, 1969, with new hours announced for Tuesday through Saturday and closure on Sundays and Mondays.

Lawrence youth shot at park during interview disruption

Police described a disorderly scene at the park after a shooting incident. A suspect claimed gang ties. a gray station wagon and a .22 pistol were involved but no other guns were found. Moore remained as the only arrested person, pending formal charges as the investigation continues.

West Franklin board accepts three resignations

The West Franklin board of education accepted three resignations at Monday's meeting. Shelly Allman and Jean Floersch-Frank are leaving for moves elsewhere, while Debbie Salisbury is transferring to Ottawa High School. The district will begin filling vacancies this week and discussed Pomona High School track repairs and district break-ins with security upgrades.

Conoco to renovate Short Stop store in Ottawa

Conoco plans a 1 million rebuild of the Short Stop at 23rd Street and US-59 in Ottawa, adding a touchless carwash and electronic pumps. Linda Kirk will manage the store as Conoco expands after acquiring the outfit from Fleming Petroleum, with construction starting in fall and completion by year end.

Wal-Mart Supercenter Opens July 19 in Ottawa

Ottawa's new Wal-Mart Supercenter will open July 19. The store, about 178,000 square feet, is roughly 2.4 times larger than the current 70,000 square foot location and will employ full-time workers, offering one-stop shopping for the community.

Central Heights Board Sets Bid Session For Four Projects

The Central Heights Board of Education will meet Thursday at 7 30 pm to hear bids on four projects. They will decide on extending the drive in south parking lot buying more bleachers for the football field and the front of the school. The board will also take bids on a network system to tie all building computers.
