Portuguese Workers Grasp Revolutions Hard Realities
In Lisbon, after the revolution 14 months ago, seamstress Maria de Lourdes Morais still earns 60 cents an hour and lives in a dark room, while many rich clients fled and the new regime offers little help. Warehouseman Carlos Marques notes gains like paid vacation and higher pay but questions future inflation and job prospects amid leftist control and rising costs. Plasterer Manuel Videira distrusts promises, fearing counterrevolution and a shrinking job market as soldiers and colonial refugees crowd the labor scene.

Bennett issues sweeping ethics order for Kansas state workers
Gov. Robert F. Bennett issued an executive order tightening gifts and entertainment rules for state employees under his jurisdiction. The policy bans gifts over ten dollars per year, bars honorariums unless pre cleared, and forbids state workers from contracts where they have any private interest. The order, the governor said, aims to preserve public trust and respond to a past controversy over free phone cards and a Las Vegas trip by utility regulators.
