US Pursues Mideast Peace Efforts Amid Rejected Proposals
Egypt and Israel rejected each other’s latest land proposals while the United States presses a summer diplomacy push. Sadat refused Israel’s talk on the West Bank and Gaza after five years of limited self rule. Begin’s cabinet rejected Egypt’s plan to return the West Bank to Jordan and Gaza to Egypt. The U.S. aims to convene talks in London with Vance, Kamel, and Dayan and expand Mondale’s Israel trip to include Alexandria. Egypt says the peace plan offers a detailed alternative to current terms.
