Planners Dig Deep As Big Kansas Power Plant Rises
In a former La Cygne cornfield a 125 million dollar Kansas City Power & Light and Kansas Gas and Electric project rises with a new lake and a 850,000 kilowatt unit. Archeologist Tom Witty leads students and workers excavating nine sites before flooding, uncovering Archaic to Middle Woodland artifacts, a gun flint, and a 3000 year old Indian lodge. The dual owned La Cygne plant will employ 75 to 100 skilled workers initially, with potential 170 if a second unit is added, and will feed a regional grid extending toward Kansas City, Lakette County and Wichita.
