Billy Graham Defends Faith Against Escapism in New York

Evangelist Billy Graham urged 16 000 listeners at Madison Square Garden to resist escapism and seek salvation. He warned that neglecting God's plan yields no escape, citing Hebrews 2 3 and noting 461 decisions for Christ bringing total crusade conversions to 23 107. More Wheat Is Being Harvested Across Franklin County

Wheat fields again roll toward harvest after moisture delays. Today’s cut wheat is drier than earlier, with yields around 30 bushels per acre and tests near 58 to 60. In Franklin County, harvesting continues but full cutting isn’t expected for several days.

Five Caught In Speed Check

Five speeding violators and two overtime parkers faced Justice Court this morning after an electric speed timer operation in the 800 block on North Main yesterday. John W. Springer pleaded guilty to 44 mph in a 30 zone and was fined 24 dollars. Frances F. Woldridge forfeited a 20 dollar bond for 40 mph in a mobile zone. Tris L. Luker forfeited a 20 dollar bond for 40 mph. Oletha M. Pierson pleaded guilty to 42 mph and was fined 22 dollars. James A. McBride pleaded guilty to 41 mph and was fined 21 dollars. May H. Dobbs forfeited a 1 dollar bond for overtime parking in the 100 block on West 2nd. A Shawnee County car driver did not appear.

North Korea Seeks Broad Conference on Troop Withdrawal

North Korea urged an international conference to arrange withdrawal of all foreign troops from Korea and to seek a peaceful solution for the divided peninsula. The UN Command rejected the proposal as inappropriate for a military conference. Chinese Premier Chou En-lai then voiced support for the conference plan and criticized U.S. Korea policy, amid continued arms ban violations by the Reds.

Land Sale Near Homewood Recalls Franklin County History

A farm near Homewood totaling about 1242 acres is being sold to Dwight Haworth of Ottawa by John P. Harris of Hutchinson. The 242 acre farm comprises two tracts of 73 and 169 acres with a long history dating to 1870, involving the Harris family and other early Franklin County settlers.

Actress Jeanne Crain and Family Saved at Sea

In Newport Beach California a Coast Guard rescue saved actress Jeanne Crain her husband Paul Brinkman and their four children from a disabled 51 foot power cruiser that drifted for nearly three hours after engine trouble on a second honeymoon voyage. A passing ship towed the vessel near the Newport Beach jetty just before danger.

William Milburn Rector of Farmington Massachusetts recalls his Ottawa trip with some misgiving after his car in the 600 block of North Main was hit at 6 23 by a 4 ton truck driven by 76 year old John Lloyd Turner of RFD 4. Police report major damage to Rector's car.

Hospital Named For Indian Wars Hero

A new hospital here will be named for Brig. Gen. Bernard John Dowling Irvin, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner who helped found the frontier Army at Ft. Riley. Irvin earned the medal for gallantry near Apache Pass, Arizona, in 1861. He was the father in law of the late Col Robert McCormick, publisher of the Chicago Tribune.

United Church of Christ Formed In Nationwide Merger

Cleveland reports the reunification of Congregational Christian Church and Evangelical and Reformed Church into the United Church of Christ. About 2.2 million members in 8,011 congregations unite under a single denomination embracing diverse Protestant traditions. President Eisenhower praised the merger, highlighting renewed service to God and neighbor.

Arrested Here For Parole Violation

Howard Benson was arrested this morning by Undersheriff Willard Lister for violation of parole. He had been arrested March 10 on an assault charge and pled guilty April 1 to a reduced simple assault charge, receiving 90 days in jail. On April 19 he was paroled, and on June 14 Judge Floyd J Coffman ordered him to spend nights and weekends in jail until court costs are paid or further order. Last night he failed to report, and he will appear before Coffman tomorrow.
