Wildlife and Parks proposes annual camping permits and higher cabin leases
The Kansas Legislature committee heard about rules changes by the Department of Wildlife and Parks proposing an annual $100 camping permit valid at all state parks and raising private cabin lease fees to $300 for renewals before 2000 and $500 after. About 171 leases exist mainly at Cedar Bluff, Webster Lake, and Lovewell Lake. Critics call the plan costly and service lacking, while hearings are set for June 26 in Elkhart and August 13 in Wichita.

Observations from Sedgwick County praise yields exceeding 70 bushels per acre with test weights up to 66 pounds, while Kansas State University cautions high initial yields may hide underlying damage. Harvest resumes after a rain spell as conditions vary across Barber to Reno counties.
