In Topeka AP report, Kansas Secretary of State Jack Brier notes a 6 percent drop in registered voters since last year due to purging. As of May 15, 1,186,513 Kansans were registered. 1.5 to 1.6 million are estimated eligible. More may register before the August 3 primary.
Congress sent a second emergency spending bill to President Reagan, who plans to veto it as he did the first. White House deputy press secretary Larry Speakes warned the president would reject this leaner version too, keeping a two-day veto streak in a clash over funding agencies through summer. The House, recessing for two weeks, eyes a fall-back bill, while the Senate action left housing funds out but added non-urgent spending tipped as too large.
Thunderstorms sweep western Kansas dumping heavy rain and spawning a tornado. Two Oberlin youths, 12 year olds Jason Bartels and Laura Mitchell, drowned after being swept into a storm sewer while sledding in high water on a city street. Witnesses cited knee deep water and a strong whirlpool. Bodies recovered by volunteers from Sappa Creek around 9:30 p.m. A tornado touched down briefly near Oberlin with no injuries reported.
