Rock Island 652 Engine Restored for Baldwin Rock Island Run
The 652 diesel locomotive built in 1952 by Electro-Motive Division of GM at LaGrange, IH will haul a Rock Island train with vintage cars including a 1912 caboose, a 1923 lightweight coach, and a 1913 heavyweight Susan Darlene. Saved from scrapping by Ron Dringenberg and John Killian in 1985, it was moved to Kansas City, restored starting in 1990 with panel, nose, and headlight work, and repainted for the Bicentennial.

North Korea nuclear talks set for Geneva in July
High level talks with North Korea will resume in Geneva probably on July 8 after a nuclear reactor freeze. Assistant Secretary Gallucci will lead the U S delegation with Deputy Foreign Minister Kang Sok Ju representing North Korea. Carter praised the deal while Dole criticized it as insufficient to curb Pyongyang’s ambitions.

County commissioners discussed a proposed reorganization to place the road and bridge department under a public works umbrella.
