Water Control Helps Ottawa Amid Severe Flood Risk
After 1951 flood memories, Lake Pomona and the Marais des Cygnes flood control system limit damage. Lake Pomona sits 10 feet above normal, could flood 45 000 to 50 000 acres. Gates closed, stopping 27 million gallons per hour discharge. Local officials note six feet of water would cover North Main Street without controls. Ottawa faced a record flood in July 1951 with five inches rain, 150 blocks flooded, power and water plant outages, 154 families evacuated, five million dollar damage, martial law, refugee centers, typhoid shots for residents.
