A young girl witnesses a dramatic cow birth at a Valley dairy farm in New Jersey. No. 140, a young heifer, gives birth assisted by a middle-aged cow No. 219 who helps care for the calf. After a struggle, the calf is delivered but dies, leaving the girl deeply moved by the cycle of life on a Sunday farm scene.
The privately owned Wichita Water Co notified Wichita city officials it wants to assume control of the entire city water system. In a letter to City Manager E N Smith from company president J J Garland, the firm said it aims to meet expansion needs and develop new water sources. Garland said the company seeks to buy the city's pipe line to the equus beds, its water filtering and other facilities. It already operates the distribution system within the city and nearby areas. The dispute over ownership stems from plans for a 66 inch pipeline and more wells and pumping from the underground north reservoir at the equus beds, a point of contention among farmers.
The body of a young man, shot five times, was found in a ditch beside U S Highway 40 about two and a half miles east of Ellis. A 1958 class ring bearing the initials B H suggested a possible identity. The victim, around 20, 5 feet 10, 165 pounds with blue eyes and blond hair, was found about 9 30 a m. An inquest was set for today.
Pittsburgh Bethlehem Steel Corp joined Big Steel in a pledge to raise wages for CIO United Steelworkers. Bethlehem must negotiate with the union on the amount. James M. Watkin said settlement talks will determine a fair wage increase. U. S. Steel intends to submit a wage offer later this week. A safety note urges one car length per 10 miles per hour. A 1952 survey found one million classrooms in use in U S public schools.
A fragment from the Ottawa Herald-2A lists visits and gatherings at a Foster home in 1955. Names include Anna Miller, Fred Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Frye, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Player, Mrs. Blanch Beard, Evelyn of Dallas, and others. The note mentions a raccoon trapped in a cylinder, dinner guests, and relatives visiting from Wichita, Paola, Garnett, and Dallas.
