Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and legislative leaders authorize borrowing 450 million from idle funds to cover bills as ending general fund balance drops to 142.5 million on June 30. The move delays payments to school districts and relies on a new certificate of indebtedness to avoid a red ink start to the year.
Ottawa police recover about 100 unclaimed bicycles yearly and donate them to Bikes and Trikes for Tykes in Kansas City. Each November, unclaimed bikes are turned over to the charity which refurbishes them for low income families, with a few given to local families at Christmas.
Robin Dunn, a 1,000 acre farmer near Wellsville, Kansas, faces isolation as the region’s only woman operator. She serves on Franklin County Farm Bureau’s board, uses a 36 foot seed drill, and handles soybeans, wheat, milo, hay, and alfalfa. Dunn also trains horses, assists with spring births, and maintains the family homestead while balancing trials of gender bias and leadership in a male-dominated field.
