Move To Cut Corps Fees
The Army Corps of Engineers began Memorial Day weekend to collect day-use fees at recreational sites nationwide. Congressional attempts to curb or cut the fees have been revived, with bills previously passing both chambers to eliminate daytime charges. Fees range from 50 cents to $1.50 per carload, varying by site development. The House bill is sponsored by a member not listed here.

Fire Rescue Saves Driver From Burning Pickup Crash
A passerby Leonard Hollis and two Missouri highway patrol troopers pulled Selva Jacobs from a burning pickup on Interstate 35 in Pleasant Valley. Jacobs, a 33 year old Kansas City man, was jammed in the cab as flames engulfed the vehicle after it struck a concrete pillar. Hollis helped free him while troopers Loeffler and Kresterson opened the door with a chain from a passing truck. Jacobs survived, screaming for help as rescuers fought the blaze.
