Scarce Summer Jobs Hit Kansas Youths Hard
Calvin Ewing of the Kansas State Employment Service says 139 high school graduates and many college students applied for summer and part time work but only three placements have been made. The shortage stems from a lack of large local construction jobs, widespread school attendance, and employers’ unwillingness to train short term workers. Some youths have found positions at Bruce Co. as trainees or at Ransom Memorial Hospital as nurse aides.
