Genetically Engineered Coffee Beans May Cut Caffeine
Researchers at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan engineered coffee plants with 70 percent less caffeine in their leaves using RNA interference. The key question is whether bean caffeine will drop, a finding expected in three to four years as plants mature, per Shinjiro Ogita. Experts note market challenges and argue a caffeine free bean could replace decaffeination if commercialized.
