Digestability of Feed Solubility in Cattle Studied at K State
Kansas State University researchers, led by D. O. Riddell under Erle E. Bartley, reported at the Midwestern Section animal science meeting that ammonia nitrogen in vitro may not reliably forecast rumen solubility or degradability of proteins. They found combining ammonia measurements with microbial protein conversion could better estimate solubility, using soybean meat treated in four ways in test-tube rumen fluid.

Soft Wheat Yields Impress At Pioneer Seed Field Day
About 300 people attended a field day at Ross Porter farm southwest of Ottawa in Anderson county. Pioneer reps led tours and served barbecued meals. Local dealer Richard Elliott said the soft wheat 578 yielded about 60 bushels per acre, roughly double the regional average, and noted it will be used for cakes and pasta. He urged telling elevators it is soft wheat to avoid misidentification. A new hard red winter wheat PL 145 was shown along with two sold-out hybrids HR 910 and HR 915A. Seedings were heavier than normal with 75 pounds per acre for soft varieties and 40 to 45 pounds for hybrids.
