Marina owner recalls heroic rescue at Lake Pomona tragedy
Lawrence Stadel, owner of Lighthouse Bay Marina, helped lift two men from an overturned 25-ton showboat, the Whippoorwill, and aided others after a tornado spawned a water spout. He retrieved divers, aided survivors, and coordinated boat recovery with help from teams in Topeka and Lee's Summit. Stadel downplays heroism, noting others would have acted similarly. The incident raises questions about lake safety and marshalling for future events.

OPEC Extends Oil Price Freeze for Six Months
In Geneva the OPEC secretary-general Ali Jaidah announced the 13 nation cartel will keep the base price at $12.70 per 42 gallons for another six months with a plan to raise it on January 1. Saudi Arabia and Iran backed the decision as Iraq, Algeria and others pressed for an increase citing inflation and dollar weakness. A secretariat study argued that inflation and dollar decline cut the real price to $7, but a rise was seen unlikely amid global surplus from Mexico, the North Sea and Alaska and lower demand in developed regions.
