President Clinton urged Pakistan to pull its troops from Indian held Kashmir and return to talks with India. He spoke with Nawaz Sharif by phone and pressed for withdrawal across the line of control while urging renewed peace negotiations with Vajpayee.
In 1947 Pakistan and India gained independence from Britain. The 1948 war over Kashmir followed. U S NSC spokesman P J Crowley said progress hinges on Pakistani forces withdrawing beyond the line of control. Pakistani army spox Brig Rashid Quereshi disputed ground reports. Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and other militants insist they will not withdraw from Indian held Kashmir.
