Ottawa Man Killed After 10-Foot Ladder Fall in KC Area

Kenneth R. Norton, 29, of 1350 S. Poplar Ottawa, died shortly after a ten foot fall from a ladder while working as an apprentice lineman for Kansas City Power and Light at the Overland Park post office area. He leaves a wife Geraldine and two children, and the KCPL investigation will follow. Norton, born Sept 25 1937 at Waverly, had lived in Ottawa since 1957 and was active in First Methodist Church and several Masonic and Eastern Star bodies. He previously attended Pomona schools and Pomona High, with family connections spanning Kansas and Missouri.

Tax Deadline Set for Franklin County Residents

The tax deadline for personal and real estate taxes in Franklin County is June 20. Treasurer Velma Powers urged residents to pay at her office in the county courthouse. Delinquent taxpayers face a 10 percent annual penalty on unpaid taxes.

Wheelchair bride wed in hospital chapel after crash

TOPEKA AP The bride went to her wedding in a wheelchair at Stormont Vail Hospital. Manfred P. Zettl and Judy Ann Reed Zettl, newlyweds from St. Louis and Overland Missouri, were en route to Evergreen Colorado to marry on June 7 when their car slid into a rain slick ditch on the Kansas Turnpike near Topeka. Judy suffered a brain concussion and severe bruises. Manfred was only slightly injured. Zettl, a former Salzburg resident, will return to work in St. Louis Monday. Pastor Kenneth Mauldin conducted the ceremony in the hospital chapel after waiving the customary three day waiting period.

Lane Sailor Gets Viet Decoration

Lane Sailor Jerry Kelley a Lane native and son of Mr and Mrs H H Kelley received the Navy Commendation Medal at San Diego Naval Hospital for service with the First Marine Division in Vietnam First Corps area. He also earned the National Defense Service Medal twice the Good Conduct Medal twice the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Kelley attended Osawatomie High School and joined the Navy in 1954.

Mosquito Warning After Floods Spreads Riverside Chance

After floods receded, mosquitoes rose, raising encephalitis risk. Ottawa crews will spray streets and low areas while residents, especially in late July and August, should wear repellant and cover exposed skin. Kansas State experts note most mosquitoes do not carry the disease, with Culex tarsalis posing the main threat.
