Orphan home dedication marked by Odd Fellows venture
Residents gathered for the June 7 1894 dedication of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows of Kansas orphans' home near Silkville Ranch southwest of Williamsburg. Ernest Valeton de Boissiere donated the property to the Odd Fellows. George P Washburn redesigned the building for its new use and it operated for several years. Disagreements over a one dollar annual fee strained finances and ownership led to years of legal wrangling with Topeka lawyers taking possession of the ranch.
