Chicago shutters famed Quigley preparatory seminary
The 102 year old Archdiocese of Chicago Quigley Preparatory Seminary closes this Friday due to shrinking enrollment and mounting debt. Once housing about 1300 students in the 1950s, it now faces a debt of about 1 million dollars and the departure of a practice that trained priests for decades as other seminaries vanish across the United States. The closure marks a significant shift in how the Catholic Church recruits future clergy amid a long national decline in high school seminaries and priest numbers.
