Soil Erosion Reduction Through Management And Runoff Control
EARL L. WEIR discusses methods to cut soil erosion by managing soil structure and reducing runoff. Baler Produces 1 500 Pound Bales
Leo Wiederholt Jr. of Princeton baled 40 bales weighing 1,500 pounds each from 80 acres using a Vermeer Model 605 baler. He rows hay into wind rows with a 12 foot swather and stores bales in a chrome field awaiting feeding. The 605 needs a 45 hp tractor, while the larger 706 would require 60 hp. Vermeer says 100 such balers exist in the U.S. as of now. Wiederholt says the machine saves time and hay hauling, though it is not for everyone.

Time To Check For Field Pests
Sorghum growers should inspect fields for green aphids feeding on seedling sorghum. Green bugs, moving from wheat as it matures, injure plants by injecting poison and sap loss. Control options include systemic soil treatments, granules, or sprays with Malathion, Dimethoate, Di Syston, Parathion, and frequent post spray checks for reinfestation.
