Federal panel may lift AAU ban on Ryun and peers
A five member mediation panel appointed by Vice President Humphrey was poised to rule that Jim Ryun and other USTFF athletes are eligible for the AAU Nationals. The decision could merge USTFF and NCAA into a single governing body for awards and eligibility, affecting the July dual meets with Poland and the Soviet Union.

Koufax Loses As Astros Beat Dodgers 3 0
Sandy Koufax suffered his first defeat since April 30 as Houston defeated Los Angeles 3 0 on Tuesday night. Chuck Harrison, replacing the ejected Jim Gentile, delivered a bases loaded two run single in the sixth that broke a scoreless tie. Gentile, banished to the minors for outburst, had broken his bat earlier and explained he lost his head. This win marked Houston’s first victory over Koufax since 1963 and the Dodgers’ first shutout at home by a right-hander since 1964. In other NL action, Mays and Waller homered for San Francisco in an 11 7 win over Chicago. Maloney pitched a three hitter as Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh 3 0. Aaron homered for Atlanta. Torre tripled for Philadelphia in a 9 7 loss to St Louis.

Nicklaus Favored Despite Olympic Course Tests At Open
Jack Nicklaus remains the favorite entering Thursday’s U S Open at Olympic Club as Gary Player and Arnold Palmer say he will need to rely on greens and accuracy. The tree-lined, small greens course measures 6,727 yards with a par 70, favoring players who stay on the fairway. Nicklaus cautions that drivers must still be long enough to contend.
