Ottawa High launches a weight program supervised by Ron Mann starting Monday. It runs each Monday Tuesday and Thursday until early August. Sessions are 6:30 to 8 a.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m., open to football players and other students, especially middle and elementary school ranks.
Ottawans excel in Lake Garnett Triathlon with Cindly Blakeley finishing second overall in 2 hours 3.36 minutes. Mike Latimer placed fourth in the 40-45 men’s division at 2.03.35, 14-year-old Chris Brewer clocked 2.37.15, while Jeff Brewer and Nathan Burnett joined Cathy Lumkenheimer of Derby to win the mixed team event in 2.08.34 and Ottawa’s Dave Swearingen, Jerry Peffly, and Randy Kinder won the men’s division in 1.41.06.
Iowa State University tennis player Greg Beers 20 of Scarborough Ontario is charged with involuntary manslaughter and drunken driving after a June 5 two car crash near Ames that killed coach Jim Doerr 29. Doerr died from a broken neck. Beers and Steven King 35 of Boone were injured. Beers faces up to five years.
In Orleans Parish Court three former Tulane players testify John Hot Rod Williams took part in a point shaving scheme. Bobby Thompson claims paying Williams 200 dollars after the Memphis State game, while Williams says money was left in envelopes. Jurors hear varying accounts as Davis Dominique faces separate trial and others plead to related charges.
Chicago starts a homestand with interim skipper John Vukovich guiding the Cubs after Dallas Green dismissed Jim Frey. Green would not commit to a permanent choice, citing the difficulty of finding managers amid a 23-33 start and a seven of ten road trip collapse. Don Zimmer was also released as third-base coach.
