Carlin Seeks Disaster Declaration for Two Kansas Counties
Governor John Carlin announced plans to seek a Presidential Disaster Declaration for Jackson County and northwest Shawnee County after severe weather caused floods and wind damage. He said letters would go to President Reagan and FEMA requesting grant and loan aid, citing about 85 million in losses in Jackson County and significant damage in Rossville as the situation urged immediate action. Severe storms with hurricane-force winds and heavy rains produced flash floods, turning Rossville into an island when Cross Creek flooded its banks.
