Southern Baptists affirm religious freedom and church state balance
The Southern Baptist Convention, at its 124th national gathering in Los Angeles, endorsed political activity by individual Christians while resisting groups seeking to impose faith through politics. Delegates rejected the Equal Rights Amendment, urged limits on birth control distribution, and condemned pornography and anti Semitism, stressing that religion flourishes best without government interference. About 13,500 delegates attended the four day convention.

Fewer Priests And Nuns Left To Serve Larger Congregations
George W. Cornell reports that in 1980 Roman Catholicism surpasses 50.4 million members in the United States while the church’s priesthood and nunhood continue to shrink. The gain stems from renewed church attendance and conversions, with Cuban and Mexican immigrants contributing strongly, especially in California and Florida. Priest numbers drop to 58,398 and nuns to 122,653 as overall church membership remains around 133.4 million.

Bell Records Sealed by Kansas Court of Appeals
The Kansas Court of Appeals overturned a State Corporation Commission ruling and ordered confidentiality for certain Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. financial documents. The ruling affects a rate case where the ECC allowed 28.44 million of a 62.24 million request, with Bell claiming disclosure would cause irreparable damage by aiding competitors. The commission had denied protective requests, prompting the appeal.
