Suburban Decline Hits Collingdale and Delaware County

In Collingdale and surrounding Delaware County suburbs, aging housing and factory closures push population down from 10,605 in 1970 to 8,664 in 2000 while wealthier outer areas expand. Experts warn of rising social service needs as younger families move away for cheaper land and longer commutes. The county seeks reuse of industrial sites, riverfront development, and open space preservation to revitalize the region.
