Iran-Contra Hearing's Best Has Yet To Come
Six weeks of hearings have not revealed the full Iran Contra story. Rep. Lee Hamilton forecasts more revelations when the second phase begins June 23, with figures like Edwin Meese, George Shultz, Caspar Weinberger, John Poindexter, and Oliver North slated to testify. The inquiry weighs Reagan's knowledge of the plan to aid the Contras and the diversion of arms proceeds to Iran. Fawn Hall testified about altering and removing documents, justifying actions to protect the initiative and hostages, while acknowledging some regret over the lack of congressional authorization for Contra funding.

Navy Mulls Persian Gulf Plan Slated Escorts May Start July
Secretary Weinberger told the House committee that U S warships will not begin escorting Kuwaiti tankers through the Persian Gulf until at least July as plans are developed. The Navy will temporarily enlarge the Mideast task force to about a dozen ships by early July before settling at eight or nine. The Coast Guard must reflag the tankers and inspect them for U S safety standards before escorts begin.
