Soviet Writers Battle On With Communists

AP Special Correspondent William L. Ryan reports the clash between the Soviet Communist Party and Russia's writers. Vladimir Maximov, a poet and novelist, is cited as in grave danger as Western intellectuals petition Brezhnev to save him. The letter from Rome, signed by Gunter Grass Ignazio Silone V S Pritchett Tris Murdoch and Stephen Spender, urges the leader to allow Maximov to join his sister in Israel and continue his work unmolested. Maximov faces pressure to denounce his book The Seven Days of Creation while officials denounce him as a dangerous transmitter of bourgeois ideology. The piece notes past Khrushchev thaw attempts and Brezhnev's warning to writers at the 24th Communist Congress about slander and aiding enemies.
