Nine teen veterans traveled to Washington D C with students from Central Heights and Lyndon high schools for an Honor Flight salute to the National World War I Memorial on Independence Avenue SW.
Nineteen Central Heights and Lyndon high school students served as guardians for the region’s first Honor Flight, accompanying nineteen U.S. veterans from Kansas City to Washington D.C. They guided, read plaques, and helped veterans at Arlington Cemetery Iwo Jima World War II Korea Vietnam and Lincoln Memorials with solemn respect. Veterans Darrel Hooper and Marvin Jardon praised the students’ servant hearts and the learning impact of the trip.
Trail fans can expect a fall opening of the Ottawa to Louisiana Terrace section as Phase 1-B nears completion with a September finish targeted. Kansas parks official Trent McCown says work is progressing well and that private funding efforts will grow after this segment opens.
Nick King and his grandfather Tom King along with Deborah Barker of the Franklin County Historical Society erected three hedgewood trellises in Ottawa City Park near 515 S Main St. The trellises stand outside the Dietrich Cabin and are planned to support double pink roses in the future.
