Water Projects Cut From Bill
Washington AP The House by one vote eliminated 31 Corps of Engineers water projects from a 1985 supplemental spending bill amid a debate over pork barrel politics. Rep. Bob Edgar led insurgents against Appropriations Chairman Jamie Whitten as reforms push for merit based project approval and greater local cost sharing. The decision leaves 31 ongoing projects funded and 34 approved by Whitten’s panel but not yet authorized, with potential future restoration during conference.

Diversion Payments Deemed Ineffective in Dairy Aid
The Agriculture Department reports nearly $1 billion in payments to dairy farmers failed to curb overproduction. About 80 million of costs were shouldered by taxpayers. The 15 month paid diversion ended April 1 1985 with 955 million to 42 000 dairy farmers. Wisconsin led in payments, California topped in large individual awards, and lawmakers consider new dairy provisions tying subsidies to milk purchases.
