Eleanor Richardson Meeker, born 1810 in Ohio, joined Rev. Jotham Meeker in founding the Ottawa Baptist Mission in Franklin County. She left home as a teen to conduct a mission school, married Meeker, and raised a family. Her daughter Maria is thought to be the first white girl born in what would become Kansas. Carlin Denies Budget Politics For FY 1987
Gov. John Carlin rejected claims of political maneuvering in his tight FY 1987 budget. He said the plan reflects available revenue after a May shortfall, forecasting only a 3.5 percent general fund rise and warning education and other programs may suffer without tax support. GOP leaders say reserves suffice to avoid tax increases. Weather notes follow with a 2 degree low and 68 degree high, plus a forecast of hot sun Saturday.
